My Kindergarten students are an amazing group of children who come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds. More than 3/4 of my class are English Language Learners who speak other languages at home. In our classroom there is a total of eight different languages that are spoken. The children come to school every morning with big smiles on their faces, eager to learn and see their friends. Our school is a Title I community school just outside of North Minneapolis. Over 80% of our students are considered students of color and 80% qualify for free and reduced lunch. A majority of our students have not had the opportunity to be read to at home every day and have very limited access to books and materials that can help increase their literacy skills such as learning pads and dramatic play toys.
