I have the pleasure of teaching 52 bilingual first-grade students who are currently in a dual immersion program. Students receive instruction in all academic content areas in both English and Spanish with the goal of becoming bilingual throughout the school year. The make-up of these students consist of African American, American, Korean, Middle Eastern, and Mexican, all who speak both English and Spanish. Our school is the first school in which the dual immersion program was offered in our district. Our program has allowed students to not only have an appreciation for being bilingual, but also respect and appreciation for their multicultural differences. The diverse backgrounds of our students are constantly used to teach about their culture and beliefs, such as Day of the Dead, Lunar New Year, and celebrations around the world.
