Teaching eager, young students how to play their first instrument is a joyful profession, but finding quality music that is appropriate for the diversity of my student population is challenging and limited by budget constraints. In order to attract and retain more students, I have been composing and arranging music that addresses the needs and interests of my population. Bringing jazz, blues, and familiar tunes into our repertoire gets students excited and encourages them to practice and share their music with others. In order to create engaging, quality music for my class, I need a program that allows me to write unlimited scores and print parts for students. Current free programs limit the number of scores and do not allow printing. The software program Finale will give me the tools to compose, save, and share all of the music that I want to create. I can add to my scores throughout the years and build a repertoire that is both culturally relevant and contains the best methods for giving my students a strong foundation upon which to grow as musicians. Music can be a pathway for my students to develop self esteem, belong to a group that is positive, get involved in exciting performance opportunities, and receive scholarships to college. Studies show that schools with high quality music education have higher attendance and graduation rates. I believe that if students love my class, they will attend school on orchestra days (2 classes per week) and build their confidence and self esteem by becoming musicians.
