The movement for flexible seating and personalized learning environments is gaining momentum in classrooms across the country. In Albemarle County Public Schools (VA), implementing flexible classrooms resulted in improved grades, more engaged students, and higher participation. Kayla Delzer, a teacher and educational consultant, has listed the benefits of flexible seating as "burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture," (Edutopia, 2016). Flexible seating also allows students to make choices that positively impact their performance and behavior in class. Alternative seating choices will make my classroom responsive to the needs of my students, and give them options to engage more deeply in their learning experience. I conducted surveys of seating choices in my classes; results showed that fewer than five students per class of twenty-five preferred to sit in regular desks with regular chairs. Up to ten students per class preferred an alternate seat with a regular desk, like a yoga ball or a stool. More than five students preferred sitting in bean bag chairs with lapdesks; the same number wished for floor seating with lowered desks. I have requested five each of these items to pilot an alternative seating program in my classroom. I have also exhausted my resources at my school and district first, to create a standing work station. Classrooms have traditionally been sedentary and one-size-fits-all. With your help, my students can take a step toward directing their own learning by working in stations which vary the type of seating to the tasks, and improve brain function and engagement. Your funding will directly serve and benefit the students in my classroom by affording them flexibility and honoring their needs to physically engage in their environment.
