I teach in a rural, high poverty middle school. On any given day, many of my kids don't have the necessary materials to be successful in the classroom. However, that doesn't hinder their drive to learn. The school is in a very tight-knit community where "everybody knows everybody" and will help each other whenever necessary. Sometimes my kids feel like they don't have as many opportunities to succeed because of their background, but I want them to know that they CAN and they WILL if they have the desire. I want to help them have the confidence in themselves that I have in them. Literacy centers would help them to see that they are in control of their own learning, and that they CAN do it.
