Using the Project Lit reading list from 2017-18 and 2018-19, I have selected 40+ books to create a classroom library that invites students to benefit from a "Mirrors and Windows" reading experience. I teach in a small, low-income, predominately white school. By offering titles such as The Hate You Give, Born a Crime, and Amal Unbound (among many other diverse titles), I can offer an opportunity for my students to both see themselves in the characters portrayed (Mirrors) as well as see the world through a new perspective, culture, or experience (Windows). Adding beanbag chairs will help set up a classroom where students can curl up with these amazing books. Adding diverse, high interest, award-winning literature and flexible seating in which to enjoy it will provide the perfect environment for my students to expand their worldview in an age where so much misinformation is readily available.
