I chose these materials to improve our virtual speech therapy. The way our school works is our students have the option to go virtual for the school year. However, if any face-to-face student (meaning they are physically at the school during the school year) needs to quarantine the Special Education Department is required to serve those students virtually until they return. In addition, after meeting a specific percentage of COVID-19 cases in a campus, the campus must shutdown for a week or two. Therefore my virtual caseload and my virtual group sessions fluctuates. For this my use of technology is limited. Although I am capable of navigating with my laptop, I still have difficulty due to having a small screen. Our school chose Google Meet as our platform, so I need multiple windows such as the Google meeting to see my students, what I am sharing with my students, and notes that are taken during virtual therapy. A monitor with a keyboard and a mouse would be perfect as it would be big enough for me to do my multitasking. During virtual therapy sessions there have been multiple times that the student was unable to hear me or vice versa. There are also times that during virtual sessions my sound is too loud (because I can't hear the kiddo!) and the classroom next to us is able to hear. There also have been times where I questioned my data collection. Moments like that are awful because I know I have to start the data collecting all over! A headset with a mic will definitely help with this issue. Long story short- these items will enhance my ability to connect with these students. Even after the pandemic these materials will be heavily used as technology has taken over our world!
