Have you ever entered the Matrix? No... not that Matrix, the other one; the one that teaches students social-emotional skills not just through the outcome, but also via the process! In their individual sessions with me, students do just that: they use a tool from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that's known as "the Matrix," and which increases their psychological flexibility. By completing the Matrix, students identify and analyze their own behaviors to determine whether or not they are "away" moves (that is, actions that they use in an effort to avoid uncomfortable thoughts and feelings that show up) or "toward" moves (which are actions that move them in the direction of the people, places, and things that they most value in their lives). While I'm there to guide our individual and group therapy sessions, it's really the students who do the hard work as they practice mindfulness to notice the workability of their behaviors, and then choose whether or not they are willing to change them (spoiler alert: they almost always are!). While we've all worked hard to adapt to the realm of virtual learning, the experience of practicing virtual therapy has made me realize that my students and I need a few additional tools to help us truly thrive. First, their lives are simply too intricate for the largest Matrix that I can draw on my 12-inch whiteboard every session! Second, while my students do an amazing job showing up and participating, they struggle to hear me with the distractions and noise around them, which is why several of them have asked for headphones. Finally, another student has realized that academic achievement is an important value to them, and needs a planner to help them organize their assignments and complete their work.
