One of our units of study in 6th grade social studies is modern immigration to Minnesota. In it, we study reasons people leave their homelands for Minnesota or, more broadly, the United States. Many of our students have their own stories of immigration, but in our current climate many are reluctant to share. 'Refugee' will help our students to better understand the refugee experience and tap their empathy. The book follows 3 different young people from different time periods, describing 3 distinct refugee stories. A class set of this historical novel will help us access information in an engaging, adventurous way.
