Our Freshman Academy is like a family, and students really bond with their classmates and teachers as their home within the larger high school. We want to make them as comfortable as possible, and have set up spaces dedicated to reading comfortably, along with building reading time into our everyday lives in Academy. My freshmen are arriving into a classroom with many options available to them. We are in our third year of Reading Workshop, which means that they will have a lot of say in which books they read. I want to make sure that they have as many great options as possible available to them every day in my classroom. At the same time, not all students enter 9th grade reading at a 9th grade level, and one of my goals this year is to build some scaffolding for those students to do a ton of reading at the level they enter my classroom in an effort to work up to grade level reading.
