I have requested the novel, Cinder, to help my kids in 9th and 10th grades continue to love reading. This is a fun novel with fairytale elements but also a hard-working, genetically enhanced cyborg who has no idea she's actually a princess. I want to teach this novel in conjunction with the Grimm's version, Disney version, and a modern version, with this showing the futuristic take on the beloved princess. Students will see how literature evolves though writers continually use the classics for inspiration. Students will learn that the idea of a girl needing a prince to rescue her from her dreary life has shifted to the idea that the girl can rescue herself or the prince, or the two can rescue each other whenever necessary.
