Each of our three second-grade classrooms will utilize a set of Cuisinaire Rods. This will enable students to do math by hand. Cuisinaire rods were invented in Belgium to help students who were having trouble in math. By manipulating the rods, students learn the concepts of arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Visualizing equations with rods that they can arrange into sums and differences, helps students learn math faster. Fractions and algebraic reasoning are made concrete. Cuisinaire rods are colored and vary in size so that students can see how patterns and relationships work in math. Additionally, they're fun!
