At our school in Richmond, CA, the average student is overweight and lacks the necessary foods to relearn what a healthy diet is like. 97% of the student population is on Free and Reduced Lunch and we all know that school lunches are filled with fatty processed foods that contribute to the obesity. Beyond the poor food choices, our students are just like any other elementary school-aged children who have dreams of becoming doctors, fire fighters, business women, etc.. They play futbol and watch TV, love their parents and cry when things are tough; and many of our students have lived a tough life already by the age of 11. Some of our students are from migrant families and speak no English, others are homeless and living in shelters, and sadly some have endured the suffering of abuse. However, like my own children, I believe they are capable and eager to have new experiences and engage in new opportunities that may open a door in their future.
