“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” - Martin Luther King Jr. What matters in society is that all children have access to a high quality education, despite their background or disability. My students are in a self-contained special education setting, for students who have learning disabilities. Before I arrived in the Tulsa, my students were constantly looked over. Expectations of them were held at a very low standard. Their reading levels wer as low as a second grade level, and as high as a 5th grade level. This is disheartening considering that they were in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. My students battle many tragedies from their past everyday. Some have lost their parents, live in shelters, and were the only member of their family who survived Hurricane Katrina. Despite all they have gone through and the environment in which they live, they are eager to learn.
