Reading books aloud often introduces new texts to students that they might not otherwise pick up. Mentor texts are an important part of learning in my classroom. I use these books to integrate science, social studies, and math concepts. I use high interest mentor texts to engage my second graders. These books align with the curriculum and topics that I teach. I often set out other picture books with similar themes and concepts out for the students to read independently. This reinforces the specific skill that I am teaching, and this allows the students to make text to text connections. I will use the book case to showcase other books with a similar theme and concept. The bookcase will allow the students an organized opportunity to read those books!
