Breakout Edu comes with hundreds of breakout lessons and over 125 of them relate to social studies, including National Secrets (Constitution) and Fix the Factory (Industrial Revolution) games. The standards for social studies have changed in Arizona and we as educators need to focus much heavier on students applying their social studies knowledge. To be college and career-ready, as well as be a participatory member of your community, it's imperative that students have critical thinking skills to aid in solving problems, communicating effectively with peers and coworkers, and have in-depth knowledge of social studies. As an AVID school, we focus on activities that include Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading. Breakout activities include all of these with reading and writing for clues, inquiring and collaborating to determine answers, and organizing clues with locks. They also help review history information while also making them collaborate with their peers to solve problems. It's also pushing them to use detecting skills to find clues and determine how they fit together, which is the highest level of thinking. Our students need engaging activities to keep them motivated and this is a great tool!
