We are located in an unincorporated town in CA that caters to a wide variety of ethnic families with a diversified social economic status. The majority of my students come from working class parents. I have taught foster children and students who know very little English. Kindergrtners are full of life and energy. I want to channel some of their enthusiasm into learning more about how their body moves in a fun and nurturing way. Watching a 5 year old walking across a balance beam for the first time is like teaching them; in some cases; to walk for the very first time. More research is coming out in support of having a strong motor skills program. Self-esteem grows dramatically when kids are able to accomplish even the smallest task such as bouncing a ball inside a hoop. Kindergartners love to please adults, but motor skills is about kids pleasing themselves when they can show you what they can do. Some kids are just not ready to go across the monkey bars alone.
