Next year will be my first year teaching at a local at risk high school. Students there come from all sorts of backgrounds in terms of race, socioeconomic status, reading skills, writing skills, family life, etc. I want to instill a sense of community and pride in my students, and make them feel loved and respected. In order to do that I need to build up diverse materials. As of this moment, I do not know which grade level I am teaching, nor which courses, so I'm looking for a wide variety of reading levels in books. My students need positive and relevant representations for our classroom library, which is what I am focused on compiling at the moment. Once I am in the classroom, I will be able to reach more students with a diverse library that is easily accessible to all students and not just a few students.
