I am integrating portfolio technology into our classroom so students can upload pictures, video and recordings of their work. Students will upload content from their projects and tasks in math, science, and language arts. Students and I (and eventually parents) can comment on the work students upload as well.
iPads will streamline the portfolio upload process and make it more accessible for multiple Kindergarten students at a time. The current portfolio process occurs with our two laptops and is laden with multiple steps. Many students run out of time to complete their task. iPads will allow students the freedom of the portfolio app. The app is more user friendly and far fewer steps. Additionally, iPads allow for mobility around the room so students can bring the iPad to their work rather than bringing their work to a computer.
Our classroom population is culturally and economically diverse. Access to technology is a daily issue for some of my students. Students that do not have access to tablet technology in order to complete portfolio tasks need additional iPads to use in our classroom. The only iPad we currently have in our classroom is not camera capable.
Finally, we need iPads to view books online, complete writing tasks, and record reading during literacy center time. We currently use a small used iPhone and other used phone to complete these tasks (again our only iPad is not camera capable so we can not use it for these tasks). While the phones accomplish the task, iPads would make it easier for partners to share the screen. iPads will also be more typing accessible than phones for chunky Kindergarten fingers.
