As a fifth grade teacher, more often than not, I am fortunate to have a room full of great readers, most of whom love to read. Teaching in an elementary school, we have access to resources to help our struggling readers. However, what about those readers who have arrived? What do we have to offer them? The answer is not much, especially if your school ends with 5th grade. Don't we owe it to those high level readers to help them to continue to grow too? Is it fair to always ask them to "help" their classmates? Sure peer tutoring is great, but what about their needs as readers? Guided reading groups (with interesting, leveled, quality texts) are the answer to this dilemma.
