My students--like so many others in middle school--are walking chemistry slides: full of hormones and emotions all mushed together to create a colorful and confused mass. They are charming and lovable and prickly and tart. Our school serves enlisted families of a local military base and working-class families in the neighborhood where our building is nestled. A great many of our students have one parent in the home; sometimes that's a temporary arrangement due to military assignment, and sometimes it's longer-lasting due to family dynamics. Often, we--teachers and other school personnel--are the most stable people in our students' lives. We have a high poverty rate, but our students do not lack pride or school spirit. Last year we were gifted with a trio of new administrators who have high expectations and a clear vision for the school as a whole. Our students--after struggling through the first stages of group development--are norming and performing well with our leadership and love.
