My students absolutely adore graphic novels. They are huge fans of Raina Telgemeier, Gene Luen Yang, and Kazu Kabushi. They get so upset when they get to the end of a great graphic novel, and even more upset when they get to the end of an engaging graphic novel series. Students, not just my own, are more motivated to read when they are interested in what they are reading. We use the Teachers College Reading and Writing Curricula to teach literacy. This involves a lot of choice for students as per what they want to read in order to practice the strategies that we are teaching. I want to put more of what they are interested in on the shelf.
