Our upper grade students are learning patterns, structure and notation (symbols) in music, yet have very few instruments on which to apply their learning. The opportunity for creating a percussion group has caused a surge in students signing up for this extracurricular skills-building experience. The focus of this voluntary activity is to learn to be a valuable member of a group, practicing diligently and relying upon one another in performance. The more they learn to play, the more they want to go further, faster. The group is learning to read rhythm patterns, play "what they see" on whatever is handy, opening their minds to possibilities for becoming an actual "drumline". We play whatever we have and work on playing together, building pride in high standards of performance.
