These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I hope to create for my first-graders. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoyed last year. Our favorite book series was the A-Z Mysteries series (one of my personal favorites as a child). Being that last year was my first year teaching, I am still very eager to continue building my classroom library.
Print books are important in first grade as many students are learning to become fluent readers. With print books, they are able to follow along a story with a place marker. Whether they are having a book read to them, or are reading it themselves they can recognize word sounds with the spelling and keep up at their own pace. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will encourage them to practice reading independently at their own grade level.
My book selection is based on one of my goals this year: To include more books into my classroom library that promote inclusivity of different cultures. Although I am teaching virtually this year, I would love to read these books aloud to my students in order to continue building a positive classroom community.
