I am a 6th-grade reading teacher and I am constantly looking for new ways to hook my struggling and indifferent readers. After extensive reading and research on the subject of adolescents and literacy, I have discovered that even the experts believe students need to increase their reading volume (time spent reading and words consumed) to increase their overall academic success. Every month I pour through the Scholastic book orders and ask the students for recommendations for our classroom library, hoping to engage them in the choice as much as possible. Choice matters, especially at this age. But I feel that the next step for me to take in reaching my students is to add technology. Technology creates instant buy-in. We might be reviewing figurative language, but the kids are 10 times happier to do it when technology is involved. To tap into that instant buy-in, I have partnered with our public librarian to have a Libby Launch Party. Everyone has a library card, permission slips have been signed, and all that's left is to put an e-reader capable device in the hand of every student. Please help me meet this personal goal!
