My students need a complete AP English Literature library with 70 copies of The Round House, 20 copies of Brave New World, 80 of Hamlet and 100 of The Awakening, classics for each student to read, analyze, and critique. I am seeking to fill in gaps in the collection to accommodate all students. My school has over 50% of the population on free/reduced lunches, and many of my students work jobs just to provide for their families. Moreover, many students don't even know where they are going to sleep from night to night. The last thing I want them to be concerned with while in high school is buying books, yet a couple of the classics in my collection are insufficient enough to assign without asking students to get their own copies. I've done my best to avoid making that request until this year, and it was awful. These kids give me the world, and I am seeking funding to give it back to them in the form of the classical literature they should be studying at this level. These books will allow me to place the classics in their hands, so they can truly, deeply read them, for the greatest gift of literature is to have a personal experience with it, and you can't do that in a 50 minute class. I will use these books to expand the world for my students and increase their chances of success on their AP exams and beyond my classroom.
