Having a class set of binoculars will allow students to better identify birds found in our schoolyard nature habitat. Often students become frustrated because the birds are too far away to correctly identify. It is vital to identify birds correctly for citizen science projects like eBird, NestWatch, and Project FeederWatch. Citizen science projects allows students to study the world around them and send in the data they collect to professional scientists. Students love these projects because they feel they can make a difference. The binoculars I requested are recommended by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for use by elementary students. They will not only help students correctly identify birds, but will also allow the students to play an important role in bird conservation.
