A kidney shaped table enables me to deliver direct and explicit instruction. Learners are better able to pay closer attention to what they are learning when seated close to their teacher. Sitting at arm's length enables the educator to engage the learner more fully. In addition, remedial reading instruction requires hands-on activities, where the teacher and learner are manipulating materials to illustrate sounds and relations. These materials include letter cards, word sorts, and fluency passages. Reading is a gateway to the world and all children have the right to a high quality education that enables them to become life long learners. It is my opinion that one cannot grow as a person if you are not reading. Reading is essential in all educational content areas and is an essential part of everyday life. As a reading specialist, I provide reading interventions. Therefore, small group instruction is a necessity. However, without the proper materials, small group instruction can be difficult. Currently, I utilize individual desks, making it difficult to meet with groups of 5 students and be accessible to them, due to the desks' bulkiness. In addition, using such desks inhibits learners' attention due to the distractive spaces inside of them. Utilizing a kidney shaped table will optimize instructional delivery and improve my students' achievement.
