Your donations will provide diverse, engaging, and challenging books to establish a classroom library for my scholars. Scholars will have the opportunity to choose a book for independent reading and share about what they read with their peers. Each of the books listed in this project were selected based on the topic interests and target reading level of my scholars. Graphic novels such as American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang or This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki will attract scholars who are interested in manga and illustration, ELL scholars, as well as reluctant readers. Other books such as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and I Am Malala The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, will encourage my scholars to reflect about experiences that may be different from their own and pique their awareness about current social issues. The Song Poet: A Memoir of My Father by Kao Kalia Yang will invite my scholars to read about a Hmong story that celebrates many of my scholars' cultural heritage. My vision is to help my students realize and reap the benefits of reading as well as enrich their classroom experience with books that will fulfill their interests and curiosity and challenge them to become stronger readers and critical thinkers.
