FRC 5431: Titan Robotics was founded in 2014 at the Plano ISD Academy High School. FIRST Robotics Competition is part of the FIRST organization, where FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology and works to inspire students of all levels to understand, use, and enjoy science and technology. Today, 90% of FIRST alumni are pursuing a career in STEM fields. Titan Robotics strives to develop student leaders by collaborating to solve complex problems, to learn from our experiences, and to work with other teams to secure our future success. With the creation of the team and success in our rookie season, we were able to help our district mentor create FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams at each elementary school in our district. FLL introduces a scientific and real-world challenge for teams to focus and research each year. Students design and program LEGO Mindstorms robots to complete challenge-specific tasks. Our team hosts at least three scrimmages, one FLL Qualifying Tournament, in addition to Saturday morning help sessions, each season. During these events, we noticed that students needed and wanted more practice with coding, with building, and to encourage an excitement and hunger for STEM. In 2018, three of our rising juniors planned and executed a summer camp teach them how to build and compete with the LEGO Mindstorm robots in “Battle Bot” style competitions. With our success from this camp, and to further grow STEM in our community, we are partnering with Plano Senior High School’s FRC team, 6171 to offer two additional camps - one that will introduce the basic principles of engineering and design, and one that will be an introduction to FLL - not just how to build the Lego Mindstorm robots, but also how to code the robots to perform specific tasks.
