So often, we ask our high school students to read novels that are outdated and not reflective of their everyday lives. My students are largely underrepresented in these novels. I have chosen Harry Potter and The Hate U Give to focus on this semester because they are both novels that will capture their attention and make them want to keep reading. Harry Potter provides an escape for students who need it. The Hate U Give gives my students' representation and validation. Both novels have overlapping themes, like friendship, overcoming adversity, and love, that are hugely prevalent in my kids' lives.
