My TLC students require a unique approach to learning; one that is varied and flexible to their needs. Sitting in a traditional chair and desk often does not provide the sensory input they crave; and their focus is easily lost. Tools such as a physioball chair, seat cushion, bean bag chair, and theraband offer students various kinds of sensory input. For example, if a child has experienced trauma and is easily agitated, it may be helpful for them to bounce repeatedly on a physioball while they are doing Science work. Another student who's low frustration tolerance interferes with the ability to stay in the room can learn to reach for a seat cushion to squeeze while doing Math. Often the nature of their emotional needs means that they are trying to manage intense and overwhelming emotions a the same time they are trying to learn. With the addition of these flexible seating options to the classroom, my students will learn to assess their own needs, advocate for tools, and reflect on what tools help them learn best. Alternative seating affords each student the ability to choose what sensory input is needed to achieve self-regulation; optimizing availability to learn! Students can learn to notice their needs, identify a helpful tool, and appropriately advocate for it while still staying in the learning environment. Middle school is a crucial time in their lives; and these students are at a high risk for academic failure due to their complex needs. Help build their resilience!
