Imagine an English classroom filled with native English speakers. The class is reading Shakespeare--Othello for example. The text, is difficult to navigate for a native English speaker. Imagine attempting to read Shakespearean English as an ESL student. Throughout the semester last year, the use of diagrams, images and checklists allowed my students to access the content being taught in the classroom. Unfortunately, students often lose or damage their materials. Upon visiting a friend's classroom, I discovered that she had laminated diagrams and self assessment checklists held together by binder clips and strapped to the students' desks with jumbo rubber bands. They had been used and preserved throughout the semester serving as an asset to not only her ESL students who used them to access the content, but also to her general education students who may have fallen behind.
