In this physics unit, students will measure the instantaneous speed and acceleration of a cart that is rolling down an inclined plane using a motion detector. Students will be asked to generate graphs and predict the motion of the cart when given different situations. Additionally, sixth-grade students will be given the opportunity to relate physical motion to the graphical displays that are so common in textbooks. Also, students will measure the speed of a battery-operated car by timing the car as it passes masking tape lines on the floor at 2-meter intervals. The students plot a graph of distance vs. time and find the slope of the manual fit line which is equal to the speed of the car. Students will learn to use a metric tape to investigate the addition and subtraction of vectors. Last, in this physics unit, students will be challenged to design and build rockets from two-liter plastic soda bottles that travel as far and straight as possible or stay aloft as long as possible.
