"We are storytellers. We are powerful. Our story matters." This year my 4th grade storytellers are working hard to become the strongest readers and writers they can be. Together we are learning to use the power of words to find out as much as possible about our world and share our voices and stories with others. My students attend an open-enrollment public charter school in New Orleans bringing an arts-integrated curriculum to predominantly low-income students. I love that my students are able to incorporate the arts in all of their classes, especially in a community with such a rich and vibrant culture. Through the arts, students are encouraged to develop their creative thinking skills and see new possibilities in the world around them. Most importantly, students are empowered to find their unique voices and become leaders who make decisions to better the lives of their communities.
