As an Occupational Therapist in the school setting, I am trained to teach preschoolers to 6th graders to use sensory input to help them stay calm and focused during the day. We currently have a large room with a donated trampoline and tent. Without additional sensory tools, students are having multiple melt downs every day. This room would be life changing for students with sensory processing challenges. I have seen how a room with florescent light covers, access to intense jumping and using a crash pad can allow a non-verbal child to sit at a table and learn to write. Access to rocking chair, calming light and a padded area can turn a day of 10 tantrums into a day of smiles and participation during circle time. With more tools, I will be able to model and train teachers, staff and aides to implement these sensory techniques. The cost of many sensory materials is prohibitive for the families sending their children to our 100% free lunch, Title 1 school. Your gift would make a huge difference in the lives of my kids.
