My students will use the programmable Dash robots and tablets to complete Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related challenges. Through collaborative, problem-solving missions, the students in my class will work through the steps of the design process (define, research, brainstorm, design, create, test, redesign, share). For example, one mathematical concept students tend to struggle with in fifth grade is computing angles. My students will engineer an obstacle course for Dash that includes the prescribed angles. Students will need to compute the measurements required to complete the mission. By working through the design process, students will be able to collaboratively problem solve, supporting each other in mastery of the concept. These programmable robots allow for an endless array of STEM challenges to support student learning of math and science concepts that would prove difficult to master using any other method. Coding Dash is remarkably easy to master, which can be important for ensuring the coding does not overtake the intended learning outcome of the challenge. By having students use the robots to complete these challenges, students are highly engaged and encouraged to persevere through difficult moments- an important concept in the current age of instant gratification. You could not possibly overestimate the value it will have placing these programmable robots into the hands of my students. These amazing students have already demonstrated to me their desire to learn in many aspects. By adding these robots to our classroom, the learning possibilities will truly be endless.
