Have you ever had to sit for a long time and you lost your focus or spaced out? When you need a break to refocus, you get up and move around. Imagine being 8 yrs old and having to sit for long periods of time while trying to learn something new. Not an easy accomplishment. Just like us, kids need movement! Last year I decided to try out flexible seating in my 3rd grade classroom. It was a new and exciting experience for all of us! More importantly, my students were able to learn what type of environment was best for them to be productive and successful learners.
I have noticed amazing results in my students' academic growth when they are given a choice in their seating. During independent working time, each student has their own clipboard so they are able to use any part of the room for learning. Some prefer to sit at tables with different seating options, some sit under tables, some sit/lay on the floor with a clipboard, and some like to stand and use the bookcases or counters as a table. These options are very important for my inclusive classroom.
This year I would like to add more flexible seating options for my students. The wobble cushions will allow my students who want to sit in chairs to wiggle around without distracting others around them. The balance balls will provide students another option to wiggle around without being a distraction. The floor seats allow students to sit on the floor while having back support. With all of these flexible seating options, my students will be able to wiggle their way to success!
