My students mostly hail from very "blue collar" backgrounds. Not all families are in a comfortable enough place financially to provide engaging and age-appropriate books for their students. This is where our classroom library comes in--a collection of purchased and donated titles of fiction and nonfiction to spark and delight any level of ability or interest. My classroom houses a myriad of types of learners. Some are avid readers; some are more hesitant. Some students prefer fiction; some gravitate to more nonfiction. Our bookshelves cater to all. My students have learned to take pride in our little classroom library. So much so, that the students will often donate their own texts from home when they are done enjoying them. This has proved to be an invaluable addition for students who do not have the same access to literature at home. The generosity of my students is unmatched, but I need the means to grow our classroom library in order to showcase their titles.
