Flexible seating options that allow students to choose where they would like to complete their assignment throughout the classroom setting have shown tremendous social/emotional and academic benefits. When given flexible seating options, students tend to be more engaged and work more effectively. Students love to be given choices and feel as though they have a sense of control in their learning. Flexible seating also benefits students who need to bounce, fidget, wobble, lean, twist, etc... This movement helps students focus on the task at hand without becoming easily distracted. In addition, many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information, which is valuable aspect for students with certain learning disabilities. Further, flexible seating helps students create a sense of community. Students are able to collaborate with their peers, share materials and working space without the restrictions of traditional desks. "Every student can learn- just not on the same day or in the same way." Our students are different and have different learning preferences. When given a flexible seating work space choice, students are significantly more engaged in learning. They need to feel comfortable in their learning environment. Currently, my students enjoy choosing locations around the classroom such as at group work tables, laying or sitting on the floor, or at computer centers. I would love to add new flexible seating options to give them additional choices for learning spaces. The Comfy Floor Seats and Wobble Cushion will provide students will supplementary comfortable floor seating so they do not have to sit directly on the floor. These chairs and cushions are lightweight and students could easily move them to different areas of their choosing around the classroom.
