Students each have unique learning needs, but also have unique sensory and emotional needs. For this reason, sensory walks have become popular in schools of all ages and sizes. Sensory walks allow any student to take sometimes needed breaks from the classroom to refocus, take a time-out, and get various opportunities to move and exercise as well. Students who need sensory experiences could use this as small reward for positive behavior, as well as, a redirection time out for over stimulated times. Students can also benefit from the use of a sensory walk to gain needed physical activity during breaks from rigorous classroom work. Physical education classes can also utilize the sensory walk for warm up activities or as a small group circuit. This path would be painted on our playground so it would allow any student to use it while playing at recess as well. We have some students who do not engage in play with other students and prefer to spend their recess time walking. What an opportunity this would be for them—a directed, physical movement path.
