What are your earliest memories of reading? Snuggling up with a parent or grandparent to read before bedtime? Sitting in a circle with your classmates as your teacher reads a book? More than likely, your earliest memories of reading involve being read to. There is never a "too" old for picture books! My fourth-graders still enjoy engaging in the time-honored tradition of read-alouds. In fact, it is one of the most important parts of our learning day. Reading aloud to students is one of the best ways to increase students' vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. One way that my students engage in read alouds is through our classroom book-a-day project. Each and every day, my students have time set aside to listen to and enjoy a read aloud. Our goal is to complete at least 180 books. In other words, read a picture book a day! This project will enable me to purchase some high-interest, engaging picture books to share with my students in the form of a read aloud.
