I teach ELA to two classes of fourth graders. About 30% of the students in our school have at least one parent in the military and about 45% of the student population is economically disadvantaged, has special needs, and/or is at risk of failure. Many of my students do not like reading and come from families of non-readers. They see reading as a chore or punishment. A lot of students do not have a variety of books at home to read and no way to get to the public library. I want my students to be able to use our library in class as well as borrow books to read at home and share with their families.
