My students come from different parts of Latin America, from different walks of life. For the most part, they come to our school for a quality of education better than that of their native countries. They attend a school that was constructed in 1927, during the segregation era. In short this school is as pretty as a paper bag, needing constant update and repair. The students are what brings this old building to life. We have students who are either first or second generation immigrants from Honduras, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, and Mexico. There is a huge social barrier for most people when acquiring a second language, especially with children, because they are learning to use their second language competently, and with that competence comes confidence. As an ESL teacher, to promote confidence, I do my best to make English interesting in their first or second language and sometimes rile them up, to give them a taste of the confidence they need to succeed.
