Almost everything in today's world uses electricity, so having even a basic understanding can change the way you view your world. It is my goal to introduce students to a basic circuit in an engaging way. Squishy Circuits have been developed to do just that. Students construct circuits using a dough that conducts electricity, in conjunction with a insulting dough, both can be made using items found in a kitchen. The kits include the other pieces, batteries, LED lights, motors, and buzzers. Students will see first hand through experimentation how electricity travels through a circuit. Initially, students at all grades will explore electricity and circuits learning through what they would consider play. Primary grades will learn just what a circuit is, while older students learn about what makes up a more complex circuit getting to the point where they could create a diagram of a circuit that they built with Squishy Circuits. My goal is to have different experiences for each grade, building on their prior knowledge. The Important added value of using Squishy Circuits, instead of any other circuit kit, is having the students work with the dough to create unique objects to showcase their learning. Being able to create something in 3D will add to their art experience and perfectly leads into designing on the computer. Making your sculpture do things like light up and make noise adds to the fun. I want to tap the creativity of these students and give them an artistic outlet all while integrating STEM into the lesson.
