I teach in a community in Iowa where many of the students come from low socioeconomic status homes. 52% of the children in our school qualify for free and reduced lunch. My students are all deaf or hard of hearing, and they rely on a variety of methods of communication including both speech and sign. These students wear a variety of listening technology including cochlear implants, hearing aids, and FM microphone systems. They range in grade level from preschool to third grade. Some of my students are in the general education classroom for part of the day, and come to see a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing for support in a variety of areas such as math, reading, phonics, or writing, depending upon their individual needs. My preschool students come to my classroom for a full day preschool program. As a teacher, I am very lucky to work with the wonderful group of students who come to my classroom every day!
