My students crave reading books not written by dead white men, but relevant, relatable, and mind expanding authors. They are a mix of over 25 nationalities and all races, and they enjoy reading books with unexpected twists and new cultures to learn about. They are respectful and developing critical thinking skills, wanting to know if the next book we read will be as good. Culturally relevant books are sparse; my school has suffered severe financial cutbacks for several years. Our books are antiquated and falling apart, and it has been 5 years+ since we have been given any new book budget. Heartbreakingly, most students do not like to read; it is a task to get them engaged. Not these kids. They got so absorbed into the characters and plot, several have asked if we can read another book by Hosseini. They enjoyed learning Afghanistan's political history and how Taliban came into power. I timed the unit to coincide with 9/11 and relate it to ISIS today; they expect more of the same.
