Due to my students age and interests, bringing drones into the classroom will enable them to gain experience in the STEM fields through an engaging medium. The drones can be controlled through a smartphone or tablet and flown inside or out. Additionally, there are applications available for students to learn how to code drones through block coding. This will enable students to have an introduction to coding at an early age and gain experience with a highly sought after technological skill. The technology and materials included in our project will spark students interest in the STEM fields and further help them explore STEM related career paths. Some of the materials included in this project will supplement the use of the drones, such as batteries and chargers, white boards for students to take notes on while in the field, and chart paper for students to make design plans or sketches for drone related projects. Further, there are materials that will enable students to make their own obstacle courses, such as hoops, cones, and foam blocks. The goal of incorporating drones into the classroom is to show students that they have the ability and potential to do something that at first glance may seem challenging. Flying the drones may be difficult at times, and figuring out the right set of commands through code may take time, but students will learn to persevere and improve. From my own experience flying drones, I know how rewarding it can be to watch your drone fly through a series of commands and understand how and why it is happening. Thus, student will gain more than the skill of flying drones, but how they operate, including the mechanics, robotics, and engineering behind them.
