According to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, "The history of the past is but one long struggle upward to equality." The novel studies in seventh grade are all centered around self-identity and worth. Using these two rich, historical novels, students will be able to identify how people were able to overcome adversity and how they formed an identity during a time of war on both a personal and national scale. As middle-school students, I find they are trying to find who they are or want to be. Being able to use history to teach this concept is exciting to me! I can only imagine the connections they'll make to their own life using these resources. The possibilities are endless!
