These books will add more diversity to my classroom library. Students love to see characters/people like themselves in books. These additions will be more representative of those that I teach every day. I have chosen these books with specific students in mind. With these additional titles, students will have a plethora of genres, subjects, and series to choose from. Independent reading increases when students are interested in the books and are able to choose what they want to read. My students are highly motivated to read already and adding these books will pique their interest even more! I want them to be lifelong readers and truly see that books can be "mirrors," (reflections of themselves in the books that they read). Books can also be "windows," (a look at how someone different than you lives). These types of books are necessary for students to affirm who they are and to understand different people from different cultures, from different family units, etc. Additionally, reading diverse books can help. to develop empathy and understanding in children. These books will help to strengthen their reading skills and encourage and motivate them to continue to love reading- which is my main goal as a teacher!
